NGMA was established in 1954 by the Government of India with the
objective of developing and promoting modern art in India. Since
then it has acquired a unique place in the growing landscape of
Indian Art.
It represents the evolution of changing art forms through the
passage of time.
Presently the NGMA owns a permanent collection of more than 14,000
works of art, both Indian as well as Western modern art.
NGMA has a branch at Mumbai at the Sir Cowasji Jehangir Public
Hall.
It is also in the process of acquiring Manikyavelu Mansion from the
State Government of Karnataka for opening its branch at Bangalore.
NGMA has undertaken a number of exhibition, lectures, seminars and
general awareness programmes during 1998-99.
