Birla Mandir
Location: 2 km west of Connaught Place, New Delhi
The Birla Mandir or the Lakshmi Narayan Temple is one of the most
popular holy places in Delhi. Truly, it is one of the most graceful
spiritual zones of the city , an escapade into the world of inner
freedom. A destination where spirituality perpetuates and the
life-spring of devotion flows with the divine passion to purify the
soul.
Mahatma's spiritual & humanitarian anchorage.
This place of great virtue was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi 1938
A.D. He used to visit this place regularly. Birla Temple shares
close association with Mahatma Gandhi-a great saviour for
downtrodden and untouchables. He inaugurated this temple, only on
condition that people from all the castes and creed would be allowed
to enter the temple. On the temples entrance, you can see a
plaque welcoming people of all faiths and classes.
The history of the temple
It was built by eminent industrialist Raja Baldev Birla. This
temple is dedicated to Lakshmi , the goddess of wealth and Narayana
, the preserver of this universe. It took nearly six years to
construct this temple. The serene and piously enchanting
surroundings awaken every soul from the slumber of this material
world.
The architectural splendor
Birla Mandir is one of the landmark places in New Delhi. This
temple reflects a modern concept of architectural innovation. It
attracts several devotees national and international. The highest
tower in the temple reaches a height of 165 feet while the ancillary
towers reach 116 feet. The Geeta Bhavan, a hall is adorned with
beautiful paintings depicting scenes from Indian mythology. There is
also a temple dedicated to Buddha in this complex with fresco
paintings describing his life and work. The entire complex,
especially the walls and the upper gallery are full of paintings
carried out by artists from Jaipur in Rajasthan. The rear of the
temple has been developed as an artificial mountainous landscape
with fountains and waterfalls. The beautiful Birla Gardens are a
real Eden on earth as they have been grafted with the adoration for
the almighty.

Janmashtami.
Janmashtami - the birthday of Lord Krishna, is celebrated here with
much gaiety, as the temple becomes a centre of attraction for
thousands of devotees. Inside the temple premises, Gita Bhawan is
located, where religious discourses and group prayers are organized
everyday.

Durga and Shiva are the other major deities housed in this temple.
Mention must be made of the Buddha temple in this complex. Access
